We are proud to announce that Matthew Bell, of Hemp Architecture, has won this years FBUA (Franco-British Union of Architects) Bursary. The bursary provides up to £1500 towards travel expenses to facilitate a research topic of the candidates choice. Matthew will be investigating the potential of using plasters and limes in composites with hemp. France is the ideal location of such research as it is the home to the most famous of all plasters; Plaster of Paris. The study trip will both seek out experts in plaster development as well as tour the exemplary plaster and lime buildings of France. The research will culminate as a written paper as well as a presentation at the annual FBUA lecture.
"I'm very happy to have been given this opportunity, I am hoping that I will be able to find a viable alternative to the resin we have used in previouse research. Lime or Plaster would provide fireproofing to the hemp and allow it to dry out after casting as they are breathable materials. These are two issues that have arisen in the resin samples."
We will be uploading a FBUA page to the website shortly, where you will be able to keep up to date with Matthew's travel itinery and any developments in the project.
